Snow is a type of precipitation within the Earth's atmosphere in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. Since snow is composed of small ice particles, it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Types which fall in the form of a ball due to melting and refreezing, rather than a flake, are known as graupel, with ice pellets and snow grains as examples of graupel. Snowfall amount and its related liquid equivalent precipitation amount are determined using a variety of different rain gauges.

The process of precipitating snow is called snowfall. Snowfall tends to form within regions of upward motion of air around a type of low-pressure system known as an extratropical cyclone. Snow can fall poleward of their associated warm fronts and within their comma head precipitation patterns, which is called such due to its comma-like shape of the cloud and precipitation pattern around the poleward and west sides of extratropical cyclones. Where relatively warm water bodies are present, for example due to water evaporation from lakes, lake-effect snowfall becomes a concern downwind of the warm lakes within the cold cyclonic flow around the backside of extratropical cyclones. Lake-effect snowfall can be locally heavy. Thundersnow is possible within a cyclone's comma head and within lake effect precipitation bands. In mountainous areas, heavy snow is possible where upslope flow is maximized within windward sides of the terrain at elevation, if the atmosphere is cold enough.

Snow is melting and uncovered a hole in the top of my septic mound?
Q. We just moved into a home and it has a septic mound. It has been covered with snow and now that its melting we found a large hole (about 2 ft in diameter) on the top. What I really want to know is if it just needs to be filled with dirt or is this a sign of a more serious problem? Is it safe to walk on? My kids have been using the mound as a sledding hill? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

A. First off, stay off the mound! If a hole has opened up it means the dirt has gone somewhere. The top may have failed and your child could fall into the tank. I'm afraid you will need to have it inspected by a professional. Second. Never pack down the snow on a mound system. It will freeze! No sledding, no snowmobiles, no grazing animals. A frozen septic is just the worst. (I can attest to that.) If you just moved in then you need to contact the agent who sold you the home. I know in my county that any home sold must have the septic system checked over first. You may need to bill the previous owner or work it out with the agent.

Should an apartment complex be responsible for clearing snow?
Q. The snow plow "clearing" my apartment parking lot piled snow 3-feet high behind my car. I don't have a shovel (although I realize now I need one) so I spent the morning cleaing the snow with a broom (which is now ruined). I saw other people with the same problem ... one girl got stuck trying to pull out last night. Should it up to apartment managment/matinence to assure we don't have this problem?

A. I would think so, probably with the outrageous amount of rent you're paying. Phurface

What is the best snow blower for a 100ft driveway?
Q. We typically get snow falls of 6-8" but have gotten snowfall up to 20" the past few years. The off brand 5HP version just isn't cutting it, so time to get good one. Thanks for the replies.
