Etymology

Old English snāw, from Proto-Germanic *snaiwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *snoygʷʰós. Cognates include Danish sne, Swedish snö, Dutch sneeuw, German Schnee, Norwegian snø and Russian снег (sneg). From the same Indo-European root *sneygʷʰ- (“to snow”) also English snew.
