Snow removal from a roof of a house, good or naughty?
Q. I am getting conflicting advise on removing snow from the roof of my house. Some have told me that the snow creates too much pressure for the roof and must be removed. This sounds reasonable because in Minnesota we can acumulate up to 3 feet of snow on the roofs over the winter. Others have told me that removing the snow also removes a layer of insulation that the snow creates by being there. This also sound plausible and I would hate to have to spend more dough heating this place cause its expensive!! What do you think leave it or start shoveling?
Asked by trey6z - Tue Dec 11 18:50:57 2007 - - 11 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Both I will try to explain. Snow up to a point is good for your heat bill as it does add a insulating factor but there can be a point where there is to much snow. How much is to much, pay attention to other peoples roofs that are around yours if some start taking snow done maybe its time for yo to do the same. Also the almost all roofs in MN have been built with a snow load factor in, to support the extra weight. If the snow gets to be more than 2' thick over the entire roof I would consider removing some of it. Hope this helps my fellow Minnesotan.

What is the best snow suit for sledding and playing in the snow?

A. There's lots of options for semi-inexpensive suits, you'll have to shop around though. Other than make sure it keeps you dry and warm, the rest is all your decision.

The problem is i am a high school student and don't get of of school till about 3:00 during the week. A. Flyer's dropped off in mail boxes is a good start, make sure you list hours of removal. Also, door to door visits with your flyer's would even be better, gives you a chance to market yourself face to face as you hand them out. I would start this close to when the weather begins changing, most people will not worry about it until then. Good luck.

Do I need to buy rim together with snow tires? What are the problems if I buy snow tires only?
Q. I bought and installed snow tires last year and threw out old tires since they were worn. In the spring, I bought new set of tires and have snow tires unmounted. Now winter comes again. I want to have the old snow tires mounted. I heard somewhere that the rim cannot afford too many times of mounting and remounting. Is this true? Should I buy rims to go with the snow tires? What are the problems if I don't buy extra rims? Thanks in advance.
Asked by learner - Tue Oct 23 12:01:25 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You don't have to but I would recommend it. This is what I do on all of my vehicles. Separate rims for both sets of tires makes swapping each season much easier. It also saves wear and tear on the tire beads. Winter tires have thick beads to withstand multiple mounts and dismounts but non-winter tires don't. Over the long haul the extra set of wheels might even be cheaper since you don't have to pay to have the tires dismounted, remounted and balanced twice a year. With separate rims you can even swap them out yourself in your driveway or garage. I would recommend steel wheels if available for the winter tires. They are very inexpensive and more resistant to corrosion damage than alloys. If a steel wheel is not an option… [cont.]

What does a snow flake outline mean on the display of a 2007 Prius?
Q. My 2007 Prius has a type 3 display. In energy monitor mode, the outside temperature is shown in the upper right corner in an oblong box. Sometimes this box is replaced by a snow flake shaped box for a second or two. It never stays on long enough for me to read it or understand why it changed. What purpose does the snow flake serve? Under what circumstances does it change or change back?

A. RTFM...the outside temperature is below 37 degrees F. (I'll leave it to someone else to determine why *this* temp is of significance).

How do I avoid snow while travelling by car in Victoria?
Q. I need to drive from port fairy in Victoria to Echuca and Tocumwal (towns on the Murray River) in mid-June. I don't have snow chains on my car. Can anyone tell me the most direct route through areas where it doesn't snow?
Asked by wondering - Wed May 20 21:06:31 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is no way you will encounter ANY snow on that trip. It only snows in Victoria in the high mountains and you won't be going anywhere near any high mountains. I'd put the chances of snow that would need chains at something like 1 in a million.

Q. Snow globes come in all shapes and sizes. I've seen snow globes as small plastic magents to small glass snow globes all the way up to a molded resin base with 1 or two glass snow globes on top. Prices I've seen range from $2 to $150. SO, have many have you collected?

How can I take nice pictures in the snow?
Q. I have a Canon EOS T1i with the kit lens, and right now it's snowing like crazy, so I would like to take some pictures of my little brother in the snow. What are good tips for getting clear, not too- bright pictures in snow? Thanks!
Asked by Andi - Wed Oct 28 18:25:34 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are two ways to do what you want: 1) Use the Spot Meter setting and meter only on your little brother. 2) Use -1 EV and then try -2 EV. The first method will leave the snow white as it should be but with little to no detail in the snow. It'll look more like a white sheet. The second method will make the snow white but with more detail in it.

A. A two stage snow blower has large gathering tines in front (the first stage) and a smaller, faster exhaust tine inside (second stage) to throw the snow out the chute. A single stage is just a toy if you ever have more than 2" of wet snow.

What is the difference between a snow jacket and a snowboard jacket?
Q. I'm going to learn to snowboard soon and I've been going around buying all the gear. So I've bought this jacket and it's a snow jacket. The thing is, it's a snow jacket but it did not specify that it was a snowboarding jacket. I've noticed that snowboarding jackets do have their look and I was wondering does it really matter which jacket I use? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Asked by Vivian C - Sat Feb 14 21:07:41 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Colors and style is about it. Some snowboarding jackets have a longer cut and fall closer to the knees to cover up the butt when snowboarders sit on the ground to buckle into their board. Aside from that, both a good quality snowboard jacket and a ski/snow jacket should be waterproof and breathable.

Where are snow plowers allowed to plow the snow, and where are they restricted to?
Q. We live in a neighborhood where its one big circle. But there are small roads branching off of the circles that contain 3 or 4 houses, which I live in. The snow plowing truck keeps going around the neighborhood and cleaning but they aren't doing OUR street. We can't tell if they are doing the other little streets because there's 2 feet of snow outside. How can we get them to clean our street? My parents and sister and I are unable to go to work since yesterday. We don't have their number or anything.
Asked by pancakes! - Sun Dec 20 11:16:20 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. find the local city phone number in the book or on line and ask them. you may even try 911 and ask the operator if they are allowed to plow your road. now if your roads are considered to be private even though you live in the city they can't plow them. if you have friends that live in the same area call them and ask them if the plow trucks are doing there roads. the plow trucks you see may be local residents just doing their own roads. if you have that much snow the city may not even have had time to do your roads yet. they only do main roads at first and get to the smaller roads as time permits. 2 feet of snow make your road less significant that the main roads.
